In the 2002 publication “What is Fitness” CrossFit first shared their theoretical hierarchy for the development of an athlete. The publication discussed that “Nutrition is the foundation of the pyramid. The quality and constituent elements of an athlete’s diet influence metabolism and therefore the molecular foundations of muscle, bone, and the nervous system. For this reason, any training system that does not consider and duly correct an athlete’s diet will be suboptimal. Long-term training depends upon a solid base of nutritional support.”
Without question nutrition is the foundation and critical to not only athletic performance, but also long-term health and disease prevention. That being said, not every person is ready or should jump right into a nutrition plan at the same level. Nutritional needs can be on a spectrum based on individual goals and where someone is currently on their health journey.
Some members may be ready and interested in getting dialed in at a level that requires tracking their calorie and macro (protein, carbs and fats) intake on My Fitness Pal toward specific performance and/or aesthetic goals. While other members may not be ready for or require that level of specificity, but want to begin with learning nutrition fundamentals and strategies to combine with their physical training to gain increased overall health.
For these reasons, you and your coach will determine where you are in your health journey and will work with you to create a plan tailored specifically to your individual needs and goals.
